The three teacher unions are expected to meet today, Tuesday, March 1, to make known the way forward regarding the strike threat issued a fortnight ago.
The teachers had threatened to withdraw their services from March 1 if government failed to settle their allowances.
Leadership of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana (CCT-G) will decide on whether to prosecute the threat or back down on it at today’s meeting.
Government last week released GHC1.5 million to settle part of the arrears after a meeting with leadership of the teacher unions.
The teacher unions, however, expressed dissatisfaction with the amount, saying it is too little to settle the thousands of teachers whose allowances have not been paid.
“Even as I speak to you now there are some districts across the country whose applications we have not received. We have tasked the Ghana Education Service to task all directors up field to make sure that all those documents come in,” David Ofori Acheampong told TV3’s Daniel Opoku.
Vice President of NAGRAT Angel Kabornu said irrespective of the outcome of Tuesday’s meeting: “We are interested in ensuring that the work goes on and we interested in ensuring that teachers who deserve to be paid are paid.”
