Angry registration officers threaten legal action

Kumasi, Aug. 4, GNA – About 200 people engaged by the National Identification Authority (NIA) for the recent mass registration exercise in the Kumasi Metropolis, have threatened legal action against the Authority for unpaid allowances.

They are accusing the NIA of deliberate refusal to pay them for work done.

A registration officer was supposed to receive GH¢10.00 each daily for the 12 days that the exercise lasted, while the registration assistants were to be paid GH¢8.0 daily.

Mr Abdul-Majeed Musah, spokesperson for the group, said a promise to settle the allowances within a week after the exercise was yet to be fulfilled.

“The NIA only continue to give excuses while some of our colleagues had already been paid,” he said.

Mr Musah said they would have no option but to seek the intervention of the court as numerous petitions sent to the Authority had gone unheeded.

Mr Francis Denteh, Ashanti Regional Manager of the NIA, has confirmed the matter saying some of the allowances were still outstanding.

The Region, he said, was demarcated into four Zones for the exercise and that workers in Zones one and two had been paid.

Mr Denteh said they were doing everything they could to ensure that all the workers received what was due them as soon as possible.

He, therefore, appealed to the group to remain calm as they sorted things out.
