Anglican Church donates to Fevers Unit

Accra, March 23, GNA – The Fevers Unit at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital on Thursday received medical equipment and provisions worth more than 20 million cedis from the Anglican Diocese of Accra. The items included stethoscope, sphygmomanometer, bags of rice, cartons of milk and milo, mosquito nets, diapers, toilet rolls, bed sheets and mattresses. They were meant to augment the effort of Government and individuals, who in diverse ways cared for People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs).

The Most Reverend Justice Ofei Akrofi, Head of the Anglican Diocese of Accra, who presented the items, said it was the duty of the Church to care for sick people as Jesus Christ taught. He said the Anglican Church for the past four years organised activities aimed at educating the youth on the HIV/AIDS menace, eliminating stigma of HIV/AIDS patients and sponsoring of free medical care. “Today, the Church feels that it should extend its missionary obligation to PLWA in our own small way,” he said.

Mrs Emily Kotey, Deputy Director of Nursing Services, who received the items, said the donation came in at a time when the Unit needed support to improve conditions. She said the Unit needed more beds and mosquito nets, support for patients, who could not afford nutritional foods and those who were neglected by their families. Mrs Kotey appealed to other institutions and churches to follow the example of the Anglican Church and come to the aid of the Unit.
