Ho, Jan.23, GNA- The chiefs and people of Anfoega-Wademaxe, a farming community in the Kpando District of the Volta Region, on Sunday appealed to the government to reconstructed the only road linking the town to other parts of the country to facilitate economic activities.
A statement read on behalf of the chiefs by Mr Simon Kokofi, an opinion leader of the town, said the people expressed regret that in the past 20 years, the community had experienced continuous decline in economic activities due to the bad nature of the road that link it with the surrounding market centres.
The appeal was made at a fundraising, organized by the youths of Anfoega-Wademaxe towards self-help projects in the town. The Chiefs said they had over the years mobilised the people to construct drains and fill potholes to make the road motorable through communal labour.
The statement said: “however, when the road was awarded to be constructed, the lack of proper monitoring and supervision by the awarding party and the lack of regard by the contractor for the community leaders who made suggestions, the road has been turned into a one-lane”.
The chiefs said with the current state of the road, a pedestrian had to go into a gutter or bush to avoid been knocked down by an oncoming vehicle.
They also said that no two vehicles, no matter their sizes could overtake each other and that one had to reverse and wait for the other to pass.
The chiefs said farmers in the area were finding it difficult to send their farm produce including cassava, yam, maize and oil palm to the marketing centres because the rugged and gully nature of the road discouraged drivers from plying it. They also appealed to government to rehabilitate the only public school and repair boreholes in the town to improve the standard of living of the people.
More than 28 million cedis were realized at the fundraising.
