Ampofi Jnr resigns from NUGS

Accra, May 16, GNA – Mr Kwame Ampofi (Jnr), Executive Member of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), resigned from his position on Monday citing current developments in the Union.

Mr Ampofi, who was in-charge of Education and Democratisation for 2005/2006, said the present development contradicted the pillars of the manifesto upon which he was elected into office.

“It is now obvious that my appointed role as a mediator of conflicts amongst the executive of the Union, a duty I have discharged at great cost to me since 2005, can no longer be sustained due to entrenched positions of the parties in the present NUGS executive,” he said in a statement in Accra.

He said the interest and image of NUGS continued to be damaged as a result of the on-going conflict and “I cannot betray my conscience and my constituents who I took oath to serve.”

Mr Ampofi said even though he initiated programmes to campaign against moral decadence in tertiary and second cycle institutions and enhance democracy, transparency, participation and accountability in student governance structure, he had no option than to quit. “I wish to assure all students that notwithstanding my resignation as a member of NUGS executive my commitment to fight against moral decadence and for rule of law remains unshaken,” he said. NUGS has been split down the middle in a bitter power struggle between factions led by the President Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and the Secretary Mr Mahama Haruna.
