Ampadu to Receive “Outstanding CPA in Education Award”

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Alex Ampadu, CPA, associate professor of accounting and law in the University at Buffalo School of Management, will receive the Dr. Emmanuel Saxe Outstanding CPA in Education Award.

The award, which highlights outstanding service and professional development in accounting education, will be presented to Ampadu by the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA) on May 18 at the society’s 109th annual election meeting and dinner at the Marriott Marquis in New York City.

A faculty member at the UB School of Management since 1986, Ampadu teaches a wide range of undergraduate and graduate accounting courses.

He developed the school’s endorsed internal auditing program — one of only 40 such programs in the world — and now serves as its director.

Ampadu is the founder and faculty advisor for the Minority Management Society; serves on the board of directors for the national accounting fraternity, Beta Alpha Psi, and is a national instructor for KPMG experienced professionals.

“We are very proud to have Alex on our faculty and congratulate him as he receives this much-deserved honor,” said John M. Thomas, dean of the UB School of Management. “His commitment to teaching and his dedication to our students are evident in everything he does.”

Ampadu is the recipient of multiple awards, including Outstanding Faculty Advisor, the Presidential Award for Service to Beta Alpha Psi, the Milton Plesur Award for Excellence in Teaching and the School of Management Undergraduate Teacher of the Year.

He joined NYSSCPA in 1981 and currently serves on the Promoting CPA Careers Committee, the Career Opportunities in the Accounting Profession (COAP) Buffalo Advisory Board and the society’s Foundation for Accounting Education’s Campus Ambassador Committee, which promotes the benefits of the society including its scholarships and membership. He also served on the Higher Education Committee and was the chair for the Minority Group Recruitment & Equal Opportunity Committee.

A member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), Ampadu serves on its Minority Initiatives Committee and chairs its Accounting Scholar Leadership Task Force.

He received a bachelor of science from the University of Ghana and an MBA from the Rochester Institute of Technology. He is a certified public accountant in New York State, a certified management accountant and a certified internal auditor.

Ampadu is a resident of Buffalo.

The University at Buffalo School of Management is ranked as one of the world’s top business schools by The Wall Street Journal. It also has been cited by Forbes for “best return on investment.”
