Amidu’s ‘change gov’t’ comment ‘wayside talk’ – Ackumey

The call by former Attorney General (AG) Martin Amidu on Ghanaians to vote against President John Mahama in the December 7 polls must not be taken seriously, private legal practitioner Chris Ackumey has said.

Mr Ackumey, a leading member of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), has described the comments by Mr Amidu as “wayside talk” which has no basis.

Mr Amidu charged Ghanaians to vote against President John Mahama and the NDC for their failure to retrieve the GHS51.2 million judgment debt paid to businessman Alfred Woyome.

He was of the view that the only way to have the monies refunded would be to have a government that will be committed to the fight against corruption.

But Mr Ackumey, who was a guest on Citi FM’s news analysis programme The Big Issue, told host Umaru Sanda Amadu on Saturday, November 19 that the “Ghanaian [electorate] are those who will elect a president and not Mr Amidu”.

Mr Ackumey further refuted allegations by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the NDC is to blame for the judgment debt saga.

For him, the whole issue started during the administration of the NPP when the contract was given to a Chinese firm to build stadia for the CAN 2008, therefore, any blame must be shared by both the NDC and the NPP.
