American social worker donates books to Kormantse School

Hasowodze (C/R), Feb. 10, GNA – An American social worker, Miss Terri Tobin has donated assorted books valued at about 4,000 dollars to Kormantse/Hasowodze District Assembly Junior Secondary School in the Mfantseman District. Miss Tobin, a product of California College of Sciences, arrived in Ghana to do her research project for Masters Degree in Community Health on the invitation of ‘Refuge for Street Children’ (RSC), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) based at Kormantse, near Saltpond.

Presenting the books on Wednesday, Miss Tobin said she regarded books as the best gift to students. However, she said the books per se would not make the desired impact if the students do not make good use of them. She appealed to the teachers to keep charts on the performance of the students and promised some incentive packages for those who would perform creditably.

Mr Jonathan Benefo, a Planning Officer of the District Assembly, who represented the District Chief Executive, said the assembly had plans to attach a library to any new school it would construct and appealed to donors for books. He said the government had provided 14,00 exercise books to the assembly for distribution to schools in the area. He cautioned NGOs who charged fees for exercise they were supposed to provide free of charge to desist from the practice else they would not be permitted to operate in the district.

Mrs Matilda Bannerman-Mensah, the Mfantseman District Director of Education who received the books on behalf of the school said the concern of the District Directorate of Education was how to get pupils to read and understand what they read and commended the donor for supporting the directorate’s course.
