Ambassador To Liberia Clarifies Media Report

(Monrovia) –Ghana Ambassador accredited to Liberia, Rt. Major General Francis Adu Amanfo, has clarified that he did not shield a fellow Ghanaian, Broni Wambour, in escaping Liberia as reported in the local media.

Amb. Amanfo statement comes in the wake of allegation leveled against him in the media that he reportedly conspired with a notorious Ghanaian criminal, Broni Wambour, who allegedly duped several Liberians.

One of the local dailies on Monday of this week reported that Amb. Amanfoh allegedly assisted Mr. Wambour to leave Liberia after investigation revealed he had dubed several Liberians of unspecified amount of US dollars.

The paper said Broni Wambour duped some business people in his home country, Ghana before he came to Liberia but was subsequently picked up by Ghanaian security authority and is currently being investigated.

Speaking at a news conference yesterday at the Ghana embassy in Monrovia, Amb. Amanfo said police and some individuals stormed his residence recently in demand of Mr. Wambour, something which he said is against the Geneva Convention, and has threatened his life.

According to the Ghanaian envoy, one of his mandate is to protect the lives and interests of fellow Ghanaians, but quickly pointed out that it does not in any way suggest that he is covering up for Mr. Wambour.

According to him, Mr. Wambour is indebted to his landlord, who is a Lebanese merchant, which is not a criminal act.

He said the publication of an unfriendly article is an insult to the President and the people of Ghana.

“The way in which police officers asked him to vacate his compound is a clear bridge of the Geneva Convention, stressing anything that has to do with the embassy including him should have been channeled through the Foreign Ministry in Monrovia”.

Amb. Amanfo added that he does not have any information of Mr. Wambour robbing anyone both in Ghana and Liberia, but his duty mandates him to protect the lives and interests of all Ghanaians wherever they are.
