Moseaso (Ashanti Region), 30 Oct., The Amansie West District Health Management Team (DHMT) is to embark on an intensive educational programme to educate the people on effects of iodine deficiency. Dr. Samuel Etuaful, Amansie West District Director of Health Services, made this known at the launching of iodated salt programme at Moseaso on Wednesday. He said the team would also embark on a comprehensive survey to find out the number of households using iodated salt. This will be followed by occasional monitoring of the right amount of iodine in salt sold at market places. Dr. Etuaful called for support from the district education service to combat iodine deficiency disorders in the country. Madam Abena Akuamoah-Boateng, Ashanti Regional Nutritional Officer, said salt iodation should be a national priority. She said deficiency in iodine in human diet results in disorders ranging from goitre to reproductive failure, permanent brain damage, mental retardation in children and childhood mortality. Mr. Athens Kwesi Agyemang, assembly member for Moseaso electoral area, in a welcoming address, called for the supply of the salt in remote communities. Baffour Awuah the Second, chief of Moseaso who presided, urged the people to embrace modern health educational programmes.
