AMA to relocate Teshie drivers

Accra, (Greater Accra) 3 Nov. ’98

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the Lands Commission are working towards relocating displaced Teshie-Nungua ‘trotro’ drivers at a site around the 37 Military Hospital by the end of this week. Mr Elliot Adom, Public Relations Manager of AMA, confirmed this in interview in Accra. The Military authorities stopped trotro drivers from operating at their former 37 Military hospital area on October 31 on grounds that they were operating in a security zone. The drivers on Monday, refused to operate to force the AMA to find them a new site. This resulted in the arrest of 15 drivers suspected to have mounted road blocks on the Accra-Tema coastal road to reinforce their protests. The military authorities have since last Saturday barricaded the old lorry park, near the 37 Military hospital, making it impossible for the drivers to operate.
