Accra Metropolitan sources have hinted that, any time from now, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) office in Teshie will be razed down.
The reason, according to the sources, is simple. The structure housing the NDC Ledzokuku constituency office stands in the way of a street and there is no way that can be allowed, especially when those who authorised and funded the construction of the structure knew they had to do a check with the appropriate authorities before putting up the structure.
“That also means the structure had no building permit or that, even if it has, there is no way it could be genuine since, as you can see, it stands clearly in the way of a street.”
When the paper on Saturday got to the Teshie constituency office on Wednesday, the paper was met by a cadre who gave his name as Adjei Akpor.
When asked whether he knew the structure was standing in the way of a street project he retorted: “That’s what they say. We are waiting for them to do whatever they want to do. If the worse happens, all we can do is relocate. They are in power; they can do what they see fit. But just you take a look at that electric and telephone poles there. Aren’t they also in the way of the street?”
In May 2002, a task force, by way of a warning, marked the building in red paint, signalling to the occupants and owners that it could to be pulled down any time after it had been given the red mark.
Almost one year one, the building still stands where it was after it had been hastily put up in the heady days of the revolution to house PDC/ACDR hot-heads who were engaged in “revolutionary” operations – from the cleaning of gutters – to the trial of “unpatriotic” citizens, chief of whom were notable Makola traders and business people who hail from the town.
Teshie was the birthplace of the June 4 Movement, and most of its operations and dirty work were hatched in that controversial structure.
Nii Adjei Boye Sekan, the former MP for the constituency and also a Presidential Staffer in Jerry Rawlings NDC and the late Amartey Kwei, who was consumed by the revolution after plotting with elements in the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) and executing the gruesome murder of three High Court Judges and a retired army officer, co-ordinated the work of the Movement from that “bunker” now to be erased to the ground.
