AMA supports Waste collectors with containers

Accra, July 31, GNA- The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has presented 270 garbage containers valued at 3.9 billion cedis to Environmental Service Providers to facilitate waste management. The 270 locally fabricated garbage containers supplied through the HIPC Funds would be distributed to 15 waste contractors. Presenting the containers, Mr. Stanley Nii Adjiri Blankson, Chief Executive of AMA said the beneficiary contractors had six months to pay back the cost of the containers.

He explained that it was the responsibility of waste contractors to provide garbage containers that measured up to the number of service vehicles, however a survey had proved that most of these containers had broken down.

Mr Adjiri Blankson said most of the garbage containers located at vantage points had all gone rusty hence the need to supply the contractors with new consignment.

The Metropolitan Chief Executive said it was the target of AMA to make tourist and investors have a pleasant stay by clearing the city of the perennial waste.

He asked the contractors to motivate the public to dump refuse in the containers by keeping them clean. “When people come to dump refuse and find the containers in good condition they will not just dump the refuse any where but they will do the right thing.”

Captain Amu Twum (RTD), Chairman of the service providers who received the containers on behalf of the 15 waste contractors said the containers would help members of the association meet one of their major problems. He noted that their inability to perform to the satisfaction of the public was the result of the lack of equipment and capital.
