AMA solicit Churches support in cleanup campaign

Accra, Jan 22, GNA – The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) will organise a massive clean-up exercise to rid the city of filth and garbage, which has choked the drains and gutters in the metropolis, Mr Stanley Nii Adjiri Blankson, Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) has said.

Unlike previous exercises that involved only traders and few residents in the capital, the security agencies including the Military, Police, Fire Services and Customs and Preventive Service and other organisations are to take part in the exercise on Saturday 28 January this year, he stated.

Mr Adjiri Blankson said this on Sunday when he visited a number of Churches in the capital to inform their congregations about the exercise and to solicit their support for the success of the programme. Some of the Churches visited were the World Miracle Church at Dzorwullu, Hope Assemblies of God at Mamprobi, the Nazareth Methodist Church also at Mamprobi, Calvary Presbyterian Church, Chorkor and the Wesley Methodist Cathedral, Palladium.

Mr. Adjiri Blankson said the AMA had invited Churches and leaders and those of the 38 satellite markets in the capital to ensure the active participation of their members.

The MCE stated that all commercial activities would come to a halt for five hours between five o’clock in the morning and mid-day to ensure maximum participation in the cleanup.

Mr Adjiri Blankson said the exercise would take place simultaneously in all the sub-Metropolitan Areas of the Assembly and urged residents to take part in the cleanup to rid the capital of filth to reduce the incidence of malaria.

“The AMA has been a sleeping giant for a long time and now we have to come to terms with the society,” he said and gave assurance of the Assembly’s readiness to enforce its environmental and sanitation by-laws and to prosecute offenders.
