The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) have teamed up to institute measures to minimise the impact of floods in the capital city.
The two bodies have also identified Lartebiokorshie, Osu, Bubiashie, South Odorkor, Mpoase, Korle-Bu, Arena, Legon, Dansoman, Mataheko, and North Kaneshie as flood-prone areas and has accordingly marked some safe havens in those areas.
A statement signed by Numo Blafo III, head of Public Affairs, on Friday February 24 said: “The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (A.M.A.) in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) wishes to remind the general public that, in anticipation of the rainy season with its attendant flooding around the metropolis, the A.M.A. has put in place measures aimed at minimising the intensity of flood and also for rapid and effective flood response.
“The A.M.A. has identified all the flood-prone areas in the metropolis and alerted all communities in those areas. Safe havens which could serve as temporary shelter for victims of flood have also been identified and made known to the vulnerable communities.
“The A.M.A. is urging the general public to support the assembly’s effort to provide a clean environment for all by desilting choked minor drains within their communities before the onset of the rains to mitigate and prevent flooding.”
