AMA ‘has no excuse’ regarding sanitation

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has secured two dumping sites for the disposal of solid waste generated in the country’s capital.

As a result, the Chief Executive of the Assembly, Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, says: “We have no excuse now that we have two dumping sites to dump refuse.”

Dr Vanderpuije admitted the Assembly is battling sanitation issues, but he asked all to take responsibility and ensure that surroundings are kept clean all the time.

The AMA boss made these remarks on Thursday, August 28 after he led the Assembly in a clean-up exercise in the central business district of the capital.

Drains were desilted while the streets were wiped clean.

The capital’s sanitation challenges have led to the outbreak of cholera.

The Assembly, therefore, directed shops in Accra to close for Thursday’s clean-up exercise. Those that were open during the exercise were, as a result, closed down by the Assembly’s task force.

“[When] we generate waste, we must participate in disposal of waste. So we are asking [all to] take personal responsibility.”
