AMA Gets New Chief Executive

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) on Tuesday endorsed Mr. Solomon Darko as the Chief Executive of Accra Metropolitan Assembly.

An environmental planner and urban designer by profession, he polled 89 votes out of the 90 votes cast, thus getting beyond the two-third majority required by the constitutional provision.

The swearing in ceremony, however was postponed to a later date to enable Municipal Chief Executive of Tema and the District Chief Executive of Ada District join in the after their endorsements.

Before his endorsement, Mr. Darko, 63, outlined his vision and indicated his intention not to dabble in unnecessary politics.

He lamented that while Accra has been administered by successive governments there has been no clear vision of strategic and integrated plans. The chief executive craved the indulgence of members in his bid to select experts to tackle problems confronting the metropolis. His forthrightness probably paved the way for his confirmation by 89 out of the 90 members present.

Mr. Darko pushed for reforms in the tax administration system of the Assembly and supported the revival of indigenous residential sectors of James Town Korle-Gonno and Chorkor among other low-income areas.

He appealed to all members to bury their political differences to unite with a common goal of moving Accra forward as the capital city of Ghana.

Sheikh I. C Quaye, Greater Accra Regional Minister reiterated the problems confronting the city and said that he has submitted an environmental action plan to the Regional Co-ordinating Council for adoption and implementation by the AMA.
