AMA donates to Charity home and Prisons

Accra, April 22, GNA – The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) on Thursday presented food items seized from some traders on some principal streets of the City to three institutions in Accra.

The items mainly sugarcane, lime and coconuts, which were seized from sellers in Accra on Wednesday and Thursday in a campaign to rid the city of unlawful traders, were presented to the Osu Children’s Home, Dzowulu Mental Home and the James Town Prisons, all in Accra.

The exercise, which was conducted on the Kojo Thompson Road, Independence Avenue and Kinbu Road, is expected to continue at Derby Avenue, Kaneshie, parts of Korle-Bu and Accra Railways.

Mr Daniel Nana Tawiah, Acting Security Coordinator of AMA, told the assumption of office by Mr Stanley Nii Adjiri Blankson, the new Chief Executive of AMA.

He said the sellers were given 21 days to put an end to trading on the streets adding that though the 21 days ultimatum expired last week the traders were still in their business, hence the decision of the Assembly to embark on the exercise.

Mr Tawiah said the exercise was an ongoing process, which would continue till the principal streets were made free from traders. The Acting Security Coordinator said “we are not denying anyone of engaging in trading to earn a living but this must be done in line with byelaws of the Assembly”.

Mr Tawiah said the byelaws of the assembly prohibit trading on the pavements and streets and advised traders to go to the markets to engage in their business to avoid any embarrassments.
