AMA disburses common fund to persons with disabilities

Thirty Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, on Friday received an amount of GH? 25, 700 as their share of the Assembly’s Common Fund to support their activities.

In 2010, PWDs in Ghana were made to enjoy two per cent of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) in order to improve on their standard of living to help them participate in the development of the nation.

Dr. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, Mayor of Accra, said it was important to recognize that national development depended on every single contribution made by every citizen.

He said everyone had a role to play in the development of the nation adding “it is unfortunate that people with disabilities are often not involved in the development process of the country”.

He said the money given to them was a demonstration of the government’s commitment to ensure that all sectors of society benefited from their share of the national cake.

He pledged AMA’s commitment to support them to make them play an effective role in the decision making of the country.

Dr. Vanderpuije advised them to invest the funds into the areas their proposals were developed on.

Mr. Wisdom Yao Yamenui, Chairman of the Disability Disbursement Fund of AMA, apologised to the beneficiaries for the delay in disbursing the funds and promised not to repeat that again.
