The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has demolished illegal structures at Chemunaa, a suburb of Chorkor in Accra.
These structures are known to block the water ways in the area leading to flooding whenever it rained.
Mr Joseph A. Okine, the head of AMA task force that facilitated the demolition exercise, said the structures were sitting on drains and had become a nuisance and health hazard to the residents.
The AMA indicated they had warned the owners of the structures to remove them prior to the demolition exercise and debunked the assertions by the owners of the structures that they were not aware of plans to eject them.
Numo Blafo Omeatu III, the Public Relations Officer of AMA, remained adamant about the Assemblies commitment to protecting lives and property from flooding as the rainy season approached saying, “We are not going to leave any stone unturned. We are here to protect lives and property.”
He called on residents to support the AMA in its efforts of ensuring sound sanitary conditions in the metropolis.
Some residents of Chemunaa expressed happiness with the demolition exercise because they are of the view it would help prevent flooding.
