Dr. Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, on Saturday led workers of the Assembly in a six-hour national cleanup exercise to clear the city of filth.
This is in fulfillment of the National Sanitation Day campaign instituted this year by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to clean the environment on the first Saturday of every month.
It was aimed at curbing the cholera outbreak and other communicable diseases that had plagued the country in recent times.
Personnel from the Ghana Fire Service, Police Service and some porters joined the AMA team to embark on the exercise.
They cleaned the gutters, cleared weeds and over-grown grasses, pruned trees along the roads and collected refuse in areas- including the Tema Station, Ministries, and Central Business District.
In an interaction with the media, Dr. Vanderpuije said it was about time law and order prevailed in the country and that the AMA was not going to rest on its oars but would continue to monitor the sanitation situation after the cleanup.
He said the Assembly had acquired a dumping site at Ga South and that with adequate logistics, equipment and man-power, the capital would always remain clean.
