Accra, Jan. 22, GNA – The recent clean-up exercise organised by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has recorded more satisfactorily results compared to the previous ones held last year, an official of the Assembly said on Monday.
The educational system and medium used accounted for the massive participation by residents, organizations and schools.
Briefing the Ghana News Agency in Accra, Mr Abature Ali Baba, Assistant Director and Personal Assistant to the Mayor, said the refuse collected at the end of the exercise was more than estimated and they had to pay more money in hiring more tractors to cart them.
He said though AMA was able to clear the streets of Accra of traders and unauthorized structures, newsstands have been left to sell newspapers and educate the general public adding that the Assembly had written to people, who had still not removed their properties to do so before the close of Wednesday to avoid demolition.
Mr Ali Baba said AMA has acquired new compost plant in Kwabenya to dump refuse since the land in Oblogo has been used up due to the increase waste being generated by residents.
He said AMA was prepared to keep the Police on the streets of Accra to see to it that recalcitrant traders are arrested and subsequently dealt with to deter people from flooding the streets and pavements. Touching on the allocation of stalls to traders Mr Ali Baba said the Government has spent closely 20 billion cedis in the construction of the new stalls and advised traders, who might not get stalls at the Pedestrian Mall, near Kwame Nkrumah Circle to move into vacant markets in Nungua; Osu; Fadama; Dansoman; Achimota and Mallam Ata among other places.
