Serekere (U/W), Dec 1, GNA – The government, under the Northern Savannah Conservation Project, would commit a substantial amount from the 7.6 billion cedis grant on the construction of dams, dugouts and small irrigation facilities in the three northern regions.
In this way, farmers in the three regions would be encouraged to increase production of crops and livestock and check emigration to the southern sector.
Alhaji Alui Mahama, the Vice President, said this at Serekpere in the Nadowli District during his three-day working visit to the Upper West Region.
He appealed to the youth to make use of the facilities when they are provided and step up their activities. Alhaji Alui who also inspected a 202-million-cedi school block at Slrekpere called on parents to take good care of their children’s education needs to prop them up.
Alhaji Aliu also commissioned two projects at Nadowli at a cost of 441 million cedis from the HIPC funds and District Assemblies Common Fund respectively.
He told the people to make good use of the projects and ensure that the projects are maintained regularly for the next generations to benefit from them.
Mr Moses Dani Baah, Deputy Minister for Health, said by the end of 2003 about 90 districts would have been hooked to the District Mutual Insurance Scheme.
He said 45 districts were placed on the scheme last year while another 45 districts had been placed this year. The Vice President later joined the chiefs and people of Nndom Traditional Area to celebrate their annual Kakube Festival,
