Aliu completes electoral registration

Accra, June 18, GNA – Vice President Aliu Mahama, on Friday, urged eligible voters to endeavour to complete the registration exercise after being issued with his voter ID.

“I have completed the second stage of the exercise. Now I have the power to vote,” he declared, when he received his ID card at the Civil Servants Training Centre at Cantonments, in the La Koo Electoral Area. He was the 238th person to have his photograph taken for the day, while his wife, Hajia Ramatu, followed, at about 1030 hours.

In an interview with Journalists, Vice President Mahama commended Ghanaians for their patience in enduring the inconvenience associated with having their names recorded and returning later to have their photographs taken.

He noted that it was an important national assignment that deserved the sacrifice and the cooperation of the citizenry. Vice President Mahama reiterated Government’s commitment to ensure free, peaceful and fair elections and called for concerted efforts to make that possible.

“Let us position ourselves well and participate actively in a positive manner to ensure that we have peaceful political campaigns and elections,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, the photo-taking exercise at the Centre generally proceeded peacefully and orderly.

However, the sorter, Mr Emmanuel Quarshie, encountered some hitches. The form of one lady, Ms Victoria Mensah could not be traced, while a gentleman did not have his name on the slip issued him after registering and another had wrong identification of sex.

The main complaint, however, was the preference for colour pictures to black and white.

The exercise started in the Greater Accra Region on Thursday.
