Supporters of New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer aspirant John Alan Kyerematen (JAK) have described him as the second John Agyekum Kufuor (JAK) to reclaim power from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
They said just like the former president won power in 2000 while bottom of the ballot paper, Mr Kyerematen’s bottom position on the ballot paper of NPP’s October 18 presidential primary will redound to victory for the former United States Ambassador.
These remarks were made on Saturday, September 13 during the launch of Mr Kyerematen’s campaign in Accra.
The Campaign Coordinator for the Ashanti Region, Hilda Addoh, said Alan Cash, as he is affectionately called, is Gentle Giant Number 2.
She said Mr Keyerematen draws similarities with Mr Kufuor because they are both tall and handsome. She continued that most people accused Mr Kufuor as unfit for the position then because they claimed he was reserved.
He won power for the party, she said, observing that Mr Kyerematen will do same.
Nana Ohene Ntow, the spokesperson of the campaign team, said a vote for the Former Trade and Presidential Special Initiative Minister will ensure peace in the party especially for the Chairman and General Secretary.
Former Health Minister Dr Richard Anane accused supporters of Nana Akufo-Addo especially Nii Egyir Blankson of masterminding the withdrawal of Mr Kufuor as the party’s flagbearer in 1998 when he was given the nod to lead the NPP.
He also pointed out that at a time Mr Kufuor was leading the NPP, most party stalwarts in the Ashanti Region did not support him.
Dr Anane said even Mr Kufuor’s brother, Dr Kwame Addo Kufuor, did not support him.
Yet, Mr Kufuor won power, he said.
The Nhyiaeso MP, therefore, said the seeming apathy among delegates in the Region is rather good omen for Mr Kyerematen.
Mr Kyerematen was part of the five candidates given the nod to contest NPP’s presidential primary on October 18.
Together with Nana Akufo-Addo and Franci Addai-Nimoh, Mr Kyerematen will contest the elections after the withdrawal of Joe Ghartey and Kofi Osei-Ameyaw.
