Alan against state funding of political parties

A Flagbearer aspirant of the NPP, Alan Kyeremateng has strongly opposed state funding of political parties.

According to him, political parties, as the major human organization in a democratic nation, can generate enough revenue not only to adequately finance their activities including permanently employing party officials to manage affairs from the polling station up to the national level, but also improve their economic fortunes.

This, he said, is one of his visions for Ghana’s major opposition party, the NPP, if given the opportunity to lead the party.

Mr. Kyeremateng said this in an interview with Radio Ghana in Kumasi.

He is in the Ashanti region on the final campaign tour ahead of NPP’s Special Delegates’ Congress on Sunday.

According to him, NPP, with a support base of about six million, can generate about 72 million Ghana Cedis annually through membership dues which could then be used to set up an investment fund to provide sustainable funding for the party.

Mr. Kyeremateng cited the African National Congress of South Africa and the Communist Party of China as examples of political parties that have made significant economic investments to ease the pressure on their governments to provide infrastructure.

On current happenings in the NPP, the former Minister of Trade and Industry asked the rank and file of the party to allow the new national executives to operate.
