Akwapim South Inter-Party Dialogue Committee inaugurated

A 31-member Inter-Party Dialogue Committee has been inaugurated at Nsawam in the Akwapim South Municipality of the Eastern Region, at the weekend.

The committee has been tasked to help prevent actions that could result in violence and disrupt the electoral process.

It would offer advice and suggestions to individuals and groups through dialogue, to diffuse tension during the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.

Mr. Emmanuel Akpatsi, official of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, is chairman of the committee, and Mr. Ben Atadana, a retired Divisional Commander of Police, as the secretary.

Mr. Patrick Cudjoe Asiedu, the Municipal Director of National Commission for Civic Education, asked the committee and stakeholders to work hard to sustain the democratic gains of the country.

He advised the youth not to engage in vile propaganda and other activities that could lead to conflicts, and to refrain from multiple registrations in the on-going biometric voters’ registration.

Mr. Asiedu called on the people to promote peace and report any electoral offences to the security agencies, the Electoral Commission or the committee.

Mr. Akpatsi observed that most human rights abuses and electoral disturbances in the country were perpetuated by the youth, and cautioned political parties and politicians against using tags to cause mayhem during elections.**
