Akufo-Addo wins Jaman North

Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has emerged winner of the polls in the Jaman North Constituency of the Brong Ahafo Region.

The elections in that constituency were postponed by 24 hours after political party agents – the National Democratic Congress’ in particular – raised concerns with the voter register.

An emergency meeting between the parties and the District Security Council (DISEC) called for suspension of polls on election day, Wednesday, December 7.

This was contested by the Head of Communications at the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC), Eric Kofi Dzakpasu, who said the DISEC’s decision was against CI 96, the regulations guiding the elections.

He ordered the resumption of polls. Nonetheless, polls could not continue on Wednesday. The Commission later directed polls to be held on Thursday, December 8. After polls, Nana Akufo-Addo obtained 14,228 to win.

John Dramani Mahama came second with 13,007 votes while Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) came third with 407 votes. Convention People’s Party’s Ivor Greenstreet came fourth after polling 77 votes.

Dr Edward Nasigrie Mahama of the People’s National Convention (PNC) obtained 40 votes while Jacob Osei Yeboah came sixth with 27 votes.

Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings of the National Democratic Party (NDP) came last with 19 votes.

Not surprisingly, rejected ballots of 651 were more than a total of votes received by the third to last candidate.
