Akufo-Addo to pay 2-day private visit to the UK after UN meetings

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will be in the United Kingdom for two days on a private visit from Friday, June 16.

The visit to London will follow a number of meetings in Europe and the United States of America (USA).

The president actually left Ghana on Monday, June 5, first of all for Belgium, where he will co-chair the United Nation’s Advocacy Group of Eminent Personalities on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

President Akufo-Addo will meet with Norwegian Prime Minister, Erna Solberg, who is co-chair of the Group. The President will also hold separate meetings with the Belgian Prime Minister, Charles Michel; and President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, a statement from the Flagstaff House said. President Akufo-Addo will also address the opening of the 2017 European Development Days (EDD), Europe’s leading forum on international co-operation and development.

His address will be themed ‘Making Gender and the Youth the Private Sector’s Business’. He will travel to the USA for a continuation of the meeting on the SDGs. “[He] will participate and address the UN Oceans Conference, the high-level UN Conference being held in New York to support the Implementation of SDG 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development (Life under Water).”

Meeting UN Secretary General

The President will also have his first formal meeting with UN Secretary General, António Guterres.

He will then travel back to Europe, precisely Germany, for the G-20 Africa Partnership Summit in Berlin. That Summit is on the theme: ‘Marshal Plan for Africa’.

He will also pay a courtesy call on German Chancellor Angela Merkel. President Akufo-Addo will also deliver a speech on the theme “Ghana, Africa’s Rising Star”, at an event organised by the Konrad Adenaeur Stiftung. The president is expected to return on Saturday, June 17.
