Akufo-Addo to launch restoration of nurses, midwife trainees’ allowance Tuesday

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will on Tuesday, October 10 launch the restoration of monthly allowances for trainee nurses and midwives.

A ceremony has been scheduled to take place at the Sunyani Nursing and Midwifery Training School to mark the launch.

About 68,000 trainee nurses and midwives from public health training institutions are expected to benefit from the programme.

The gesture is to mark the fulfillment of a manifesto promise by the president. During the 2016 electioneering campaign, then candidate Akufo-Addo promised to restore the allowances, which were scrapped by the John Mahama-led government.

That government also scrapped teacher trainee allowances, asking all of them to register with the Students Loan Trust. But with the restoration, each student nurse will receive GH¢400 monthly.

“The cost of the restoration is adequately captured in the 2017 budget presented in March, 2017,” a statement issued by the Ministry of Health said.
