The 2012 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, his running mate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and NPP National Chairman Jake Obetsebi Lamptey, were on Friday mobbed at the Abbosey Okai Central Mosque in Accra when they turned up at the facility to offer gratitude to God.
The warm reception the trio received was given impetus by the Chief Imam Sheikh Nuhu Sharubutu’s commendation for Nana Akufo-Addo who, he said, deserved prayers.
He recalled the reaction of Nana Akufo-Addo after the verdict of the Supreme Court, which according to him, doused what could have ignited the country. He said “when one is not happy about a situation they can go to court to seek redress.
Nana did same and promised to abide by the verdict of the Supreme Court. He opened up his heart and said that he would respect the verdict of the court, something which helped the country. This man deserves our prayers because his action has ensured peace in the country. It is people like this who bring peace.”
Nana Addo responded thus: “It is important that we give thanks to God because there was no violence during and after the petition in court and that our country still remains peaceful and united.”
He thanked the Chief Imam and all Muslims across the country for their support and prayers and appealed to them to ask for Allah’s blessing for Dr. Bawumia, Jake, himself and the party as a whole.
Nana Addo also called on them to continue to pray for Allah to preserve Ghana’s peace to ensure effective development.
Following the Supreme Court verdict, the leadership of the NPP decided to organize religious activities to render gratitude to God through both the Christian and Islamic faiths.
The programme of activities began with Islamic prayers yesterday to be followed by others in various Christian denominations until Sunday.
A large retinue of Muslims in the NPP, including the membership of the Nasara Club of the party, accompanied the three persons to the Abossey Okai Central Mosque.
Long before their arrival at the mosque, many Muslims had turned up in anticipation of the visit.
The Chief Imam earlier visited Nana Akufo-Addo at his Nima residence to express gratitude to him for ensuring the peace of the country soon after the Supreme Court verdict.
He recalled how Nana called on him to announce his intention to contest the results of the 2012 polls and to respect the emanating verdict whichever way it went.
