Akuafo Hall honours farmers

Accra, Nov. 3, GNA – The Akuafo Hall and the Akuafo Hall Alumni Association of the University of Ghana, Legon on Tuesday hosted National Award Wining Farmers for this year by mounting a plaque that bears the name of all National Best farmers. The farmers were also hosted to a dinner where palm wine, roasted plantain and other local foodstuffs were served.

Mr Clement Eledi, Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, unveiling the plaque commended staff and students of Akuafo Hall and the Alumni for coming up with such a programme.

Professor Kwadwo Asenso Okyere, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana said farmers had a big place in the University, adding: “The contributions farmers make to the economy of this country is enormous.” He called for more support for the Farmers’ Day celebration in this country.

Rev. Dr. Cephas Omenyo, Akuafo Hall Master, who described the Hall as the home of farmers said the Hall, had decided to host farmers annually.

He dedicated a fountain at the middle of the Hall to all farmers. Dr Omenyo urged the farmers to help to expand facilities at the Hall saying that even though it was built for 500 students it now housed more than 3,000 students.

Dr Edward Nstiful Siaw, Spokesperson for the Award Winners said what Akuafo Hall had done gave the hope that there would be more educated farmers in the country.

He said more youth should be encouraged to enter the agricultural business and called on the Government to invest in agribusiness. The farmers were presented with souvenirs.
