Farm4life Ghana, the subsidiary of a British-based charity last Wednesday presented assorted sporting equipment to the Akropong School for the Blind as part of continuing efforts to promote sports among the visually impaired.
The donation forms part of the award winning 2013 Pepsi International Cricket Coucil (ICC) project, which began last year and was done in conjunction with the Ghana Cricket Association (GCA) at Akropong.
According to Lloyd Clever, the founder of Farm4life, the items which included; jerseys, footballs designed for the visually impaired, goal posts, cones, tennis rackets and mats were donated by schools in England but cost GHC 25,000 to transport to Ghana.
“The equipment brought here today are from Hampshire Cricket, West Hill Park School, Elsing Park School, a school in Scunthorpe with another institution Hillhead Preparatory School donating all the equipment in their school; most of it came from the Southern part of England”, added Mr Clever, also a Trustee of Farm4life.
He added that, “Hopefully we will get a rebate as a charity but I have no idea what the equipment itself cost, but the whole project to get the equipment here cost about £ 5,000 which is approximately GHC 25,000”.
After the donation, two cricket teams of the school; Royals and Unity played an exhibition game which Unity won by five wickets after scoring 49 runs for six wickets in 8.3 overs while the losers, Royals who won the toss and batted first were all-out after 48 rounds in 9.5 overs.
Sharon Lanfear, a trustee of the charity, also disclosed that disabled schools could contact her outfit at www.farm4life .org for free sports equipment.
