Akosombo Textile Donates C3.5 million To Help The Aged

Accra Akosombo Textile Limited (ATL) has presented one million cedis cash and items worth 2.5 million cedis to Help Age Ghana at a ceremony in Accra. The items made up of five bags of rice, three bags of sugar, four cartons of guardian soap and three gallons of disinfectant, were presented on behalf of the company by Mr Stephen K. Agbewali, Managing director of Cella Limited, a customer of the company. Mrs Margaret Opoku, Public Relations Officer of ATL, said the donation came from proceeds of a charity raffle organised by the company during the 1997 Industry and Technology (INDUTECH) fair. She said the Osu Childrens Home, Teshie School for the Deaf and the 31st December Women’s Movement are some of the beneficiaries of the raffle. The donation, she said, is the company’s contribution in running a Day Care Centre complex for the elderly due to be commissioned soon. Mrs Sera Akiwumi, a Board member of Help Age Ghana, who received the items thanked the donors. Madam Joanna Baddoo, also a member of the Help Age Board, said the organisation relies on the benevolence of the public to carry out its programmes and assured the donors that the items would be put to good use. She said the plight of the destitute in Ghana is so terrible that they tend to grow old prematurely and appealed for more assistance to cater for their needs.
