Akosombo Generator to be shut down

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has announced that the Akosombo Generator # Two will be shut down for seven days from May 25, 2002 for mandatory inspection of the splitter vane.

The splitter vane, which has a five-year warranty subject to regular inspections, was installed in the draft tube to enhance efficiency when the Unit was retrofitted last year.

A press release from VRA said although the scheduled outage of the Unit will reduce generation capacity, no load shedding will be required during the period. However in the unlikely event of an unanticipated problem with another generating unit during the period, some load shedding may become necessary.

VRA wishes to assure customers that everything will be done to ensure that they are not inconvenienced during the period.
