Akim Swedru Court fines rider for causing death

Benjamin Oduro, a motorbike rider who knocked down a five-year-old pupil which resulted in his death, has been jailed to a fine of 480.00 Ghana cedis by the Akim Swedru Circuit Court.

He was charged with three counts of negligently causing death, used of unregistered motorbike and riding without license and would go to prison for two years with hard labour if fails to pay the fine.

Oduro in his first appearance in court in 2012 pleaded not guilty to the offences and was granted bail but in January, this year admitted committing the crime.

Giving the details of the case, Police Chief Inspector Kingsley Kwaku Antwi told the court presided by Mr Yaw Atta Sampong that May 31, 2012 Oduro was riding with a pillion on unregistered motorbike from Akim Achiase to Akim Oda.

The prosecutor said in arriving at a section of the road at Achiase, Oduro who was riding with speed knocked the five-year-old pupil who was crossing the road.

The boy sustained various degrees of injuries and was reported dead on arrival at the Achiase Health Centre.
