Air force wins constitution game contest

Sekondi, May 03, GNA – A navy officer on Tuesday appealed to the security services to promote and create awareness about the 1992 constitution for better understanding among their rank and file. Commodore Frank Daley, the Flag Officer Commanding the Western Naval Command, said it was only when the constitution is thoroughly understood by every Ghanaian that the people would be ready to defend it to the hilt.

He was addressing personnel of Army, Prisons, Immigration, Police, Navy, Air Force and the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) who participated in a constitution game contest at the Sekondi Naval Base on Tuesday.

The contest was organised by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in connection with the fifth anniversary celebration of the Constitution Week in the Western Region.

The theme for the celebration is “reducing poverty through citizens participation in local government”.

Commodore Daley reminded the participants of their special role and obligation to defend and protect the constitution at all times even to the peril of their lives.

He commended the NCCE on its role to educate the public on the constitution and the introduction of the constitution game, which he said would help to sustain interests by many to understand the document. Mr Kwaku Baa Owusu, Western Regional Director of the NCCE, said the security agencies have specific roles and functions to play and the law requires them to play these roles and functions lawfully. ”Democracy is not only the rule by the majority but also the rule in which the minority rights and views are respected and considered.” Air Force won the contest with 15 points and 120 marks, while Prisons took the second position with 12 points with 130 marks.

GNFS was third with 12 points and 70 marks, Immigration; six points with 120 marks, Police; six points with 70 marks, Navy three points with 70 marks and Army three points with 15 marks.

The Air Force team took home a constitution, a constitution game and copies of the abridged constitution as their prize.
