A huge refuse heap at ‘Bɔɔla Kɛseɛm’ in Mankranso Zongo, Kumasi, has been cleared and transported to a final disposal site after intervention by the Ahafo Ano South West District Chief Executive, Abubakar Sedik.
The evacuation was carried out on Tuesday, 25 August 2026, following growing concerns about the impact of the waste on residents and the wider environment.
The refuse had accumulated into what residents described as a mountainous heap, creating an unpleasant sight and offensive odour while raising concerns about the potential spread of disease. Its removal is part of Mr Sedik’s stated commitment to improving sanitation, protecting public health and providing a cleaner and safer environment across the district.
The operation has changed conditions at the site, removing the large accumulation of solid waste and reducing the environmental and health risks associated with leaving refuse to build up over a prolonged period.
Mr Sedik said the health and wellbeing of residents remained a central priority for his administration. He also stressed that development could not be considered meaningful if people continued to live in unhealthy and unsanitary surroundings.
The intervention reflects the administration’s intention to address sanitation problems through practical and timely measures, rather than allowing environmental concerns to become more serious.
Residents of Mankranso Zongo welcomed the clearance and expressed their appreciation for the swift response to a problem that had affected the community for some time.
The removal is expected to improve sanitation and environmental cleanliness in the area. It should also help reduce the likelihood of diseases associated with improper waste disposal.
Mr Sedik appealed to residents to help protect the newly cleaned surroundings by disposing of waste properly and avoiding the creation of refuse heaps at unauthorised sites.
“The health of our people is paramount to me. A clean environment is essential to a healthy community, and we will continue to take practical steps to protect the people and improve their living conditions,” he stated.
The DCE said the clearance was part of the wider focus of his administration on sanitation, public health and the general welfare of people in the Ahafo Ano South West District.
The intervention at ‘Bɔɔla Kɛseɛm’ follows concerns over the continued accumulation of refuse in Mankranso Zongo and is expected to provide residents with a cleaner environment while reinforcing the need for responsible waste management within the community.
Residents now face the task of maintaining the area after the evacuation. The appeal from the district administration is for households and other members of the community to ensure waste is taken to approved disposal points, preventing another large heap from forming at the site.
