Mankranso (Ash.), April 18, GNA – Thirty-eight out of 64 women who attended antenatal clinic at the Sabronum Health Centre in the Ahafo-Ano South District were aged between 13 and 17 years. Miss Comfort Adu, the midwife in charge of the Centre who made this known during a People’s assembly at Mankranso, called on the district assembly to act decisively to bring down the unacceptable rate at which children in the area were getting pregnant.
Most of the speakers at the assembly complained about the lack of facilities by way of accommodation, transport and communication equipment for the police in the district.
They suggested to the district assembly and the Police Administration to help improve on the situation. Opanin Obeng Nyarko of Pokukrom praised the government for providing the area with its fair share of development as evidenced from the improvement of roads, building of new classroom blocks and supply of electricity to a number of communities.
Mrs Patricia Appiagyei, Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, asked the people to be disciplined, law-abiding and pay their taxes. She was not happy with the reported high incidence of teenage pregnancy in the district and appealed to the chiefs to join hands with the assembly and the health workers to step up education and health. 18 April 05
