Agona Swedru, July 22, GNA – Students of the Agona Swedru Emmanuel Methodist Vocational Training Institute, have staged a two-hour demonstration against the school authorities and the management of the Church for being insensitive to their plight.
The students who marched through the principal streets of Agona Swedru later converged at the Mission House to present their grievances to the Very Reverend Abekah Wilson, Head of the Circuit who was not present.
Speaking to the GNA after the demonstration, Miss Janet Yeboah, the School Prefect, accused the authorities and the management of the Swedru Methodist Church for neglecting the institution.
She said since the institute was established two years ago, the students had been attending classes in the Church Hall and also lack tutors.
According to the Prefect, the students had pleaded with the authorities and the management to divide the hall into classrooms with plywood to no avail.
She said they paid 200,000 cedis as school fees and another 200,000 cedis as hostel fees but were not comfortable to study. Miss Yeboah said the hostel had no toilet facilities, water and electricity, adding that, they were going through a lot of stress to enable them to study.
She said their peers at Agona Swedru and its environs wanted to attend the institute but were deterred by the prevailing situation in the school.
Madam Josephine Essiaw, Headmistress, expressed surprised about the demonstration even though it was conducted in a peaceful manner. She accepted the grievances of the students and pointed out that everything possible was being done to put up temporary structures to enhance effective teaching and learning. Madam Essiaw said the Church had acquired land to build classrooms, adding that, the project had taken off.
