Africa Peer Review Officials arrive

Accra, May 24, GNA – An eminent member of the African Peer Review Panel, Dr Chris Stals arrived in Accra this evening at the head of an eight-member support mission delegation to interact with its counterpart in Ghana.

He told journalists at the airport they were in the country to initiate Ghana’s review of its compliance with the dictates of the Peer Review Mechanism set by the African Union.

Dr Stals, who is also a former Governor of the Reserve Bank of South Africa, noted that Ghana has set up a secretariat, which, he said was an indication that Ghana is ready to be reviewed. Dr Francis Appiah, Executive Secretary of National African Peer Review Mechanism Governing Council, said the meeting would take the form a forum, which would bring together members of the Executive, Legislature, the Judiciary, Civil Societies, NGOs, Trade Unions, private sector and professional bodies.

The forum is expected to be opened by President John Agyekum Kufuor.

Ghana’s review would take about six months after which the governing council would send its report to the AU for its recommendations. Dr Stal and his team were met on arrival at the airport by members of Ghana’s Governing Council, led by the chairman, Reverend Professor Samuel Agyapong.
