Africa Must Prioritise Operationalising Energy Bank – Ministe

Story By: Akua Oteng Amponsah

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has emphasized the need for Africa to reduce its reliance on external funding for energy projects.

Speaking at the 2025 Africa Energy Technology Conference (AETC) in Ghana, Mr. Jinapor called for the immediate operationalisation of the Africa Energy Bank.

The minister stressed that a homegrown financing mechanism is crucial for de-risking and funding large-scale energy infrastructure projects on the continent.

“We can no longer rely solely on external financing riddled with conditions, distortions and colonial echoes,”he said. “We must develop our own financial market one that de-risks local projects, backs big-ticket energy infrastructure and retains value in the continent.”

Mr. Jinapor added that the full operationalisation of the Africa Energy Bank must be a top priority.

The conference, themed “Innovate, Invest, Implement: Revolutionising Financing for Sustainable Energy Growth in Africa”, brought together policymakers, investors, and technology leaders to explore pathways for accelerating Africa’s energy transition while ensuring economic sustainability.
