Gomoa Afranse (C/R), May 22, GNA – Afranse Unit Committee has been inaugurated with a call on members to rekindle the waning communal spirit in the community. Mr Isaac Kingsely Ahunu-Armah, Gomoa East District Chief Executive, who inaugurated the committee, said the unit committee was an important component of the overall governance system. On the rekindling of the waning communal spirit, the DCE said: 93our communities could not develop as fast as we wished if we did not offer communal labour to support government efforts.” He said in the rural areas, about 80 per cent of the people depended on unit committee members for information and advice. “You represent an indispensable pivot around which political and economic development of the district and the country as a whole revolve”,Mr Ahunu-Armah said.
He urged them to live modest life styles for the electorate to have confidence and trust in them. The DCE cautioned them to desist from involving themselves in land and chieftaincy disputes which could disturb the peace of their areas. He appealed to them to promote personal and environmental cleanliness in the communities. “Today, many of our communities are engulfed in filth, you may realise that we are not taking steps to bequeath the future generation a healthy environment,” he said.
Mr Ahunu-Armah said it was not uncommon for people to clean their homes and dump the refuse in the drains in front of their houses. He said this attitude of living in filth result in diseases such as cholera and malaria. The DCE said the government believed in transfer of authority and resources to the grassroots and would support them to do effective work.
Mr Charles Wiafe, District Magistrate, swore the members into office. They swore oaths of allegiance, oaths of secrecy and the official oaths. He stressed on the importance of the oath of secrecy which he said people abused with impunity. Mr Wiafe said sensitive information normally come out from offices of the President, the Vice-President, ministers and DCEs and cautioned that those who divulged such information could be jailed if caught.
