Aflao township celebrates Stars egypt

Aflao (V/R), Feb 4, GNA – The border town of Aflao in the Ketu district was again thrown into massive celebration Sunday night, following a 2-1 victory by the national soccer team, Black Stars in their CAN 2008 quarter final match against the Super Eagles of Nigeria in Accra.

Streets and alleys of the town were jammed with jubilant fans, who drummed, sang and danced while vehicles tooted their horns. The celebration extended to the main Ghana-Togo frontier with commuters waving in appreciation of the Black Stars’ feat. Mrs Amodey Adiolayi, a Nigerian resident at Aflao told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that she was not so much disturbed about Nigeria’s defeat, adding that victory for the Ghanaian team had been long “on the wall”, citing the performance of the two teams at the start of the tournament.

Prince Afolabi, also a Nigerian, said the Eagles were a disappointment, adding that such defeats by Ghana had always been a painful experience for Nigerians.

During the celebrations fans also condemned the Algerian referee for sending off the captain of the Black Stars, John Mensah, with many people saying the worst he could have done was to show him a yellow card.

Others also expressed displeasure about the referee’s decision to award a penalty to the Nigerians, which put them in the lead in the first half of the game.
