Afigya-Kwabre takes steps to strengthen sub-structures

The Afigya-Kwabre District Assembly has taken steps to strengthen its sub-structures to actively engage and get the people behind the assembly’s development agenda.

The Area Councils are therefore being equipped to efficiently operate and assist in revenue mobilization.

Mr Kwaku Oppong-Kyekyeku Kaakyire, the District Chief Executive (DCE), said every effort was being made to provide office space to allow the Councilors to carry out their assigned job.

He said there could not be any doubt that given the needed incentives, the councils could prove pivotal to the socio-economic progress of the district and that was why they would go to all lengths to make them functional.

The DCE was speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) during an inspection of an old Post Office building, which is being rehabilitated to house the Yamoa-Ponko Area Council at Ankaase.

Reporters of the nation’s wire service had gone there under STAR-Ghana’s sponsored media auditing and tracking of development projects, an initiative launched to put a spotlight on how government’s resources were helping to transform the lives of the people, particularly, the rural population.

The goal is to aid transparency, promote accountability and good governance.

Afigya-Kwabre has eight Area Councils and these are located at Nkaben, Boamang, Kodie, Yamoa-Ponko, Kwabre-Manhyia, Tetrem/Kyekyewere, Anyinasu and Adwumakase-kese.

Collection of some rates and fees had been ceded to them by the assembly and these include burial fees, market tolls and imposition of fines on stray animals in the various communities.

Additionally, they have been supervising the implementation of development projects in their areas of jurisdiction.

Mr Oppong-Kyekyeku said the expectation was that the councilors would work hard and with renewed determination to support the assembly carry through its development programmes.

They have a significant part to play to make things happen and make life better for everybody, he added.
