Afigya-Kwabre assembly embarks on agriculture projects

Kodie (Ash), Oct. 4, GNA – The Afigya-Kwabre District Assembly has embarked on block farming putting 31 acres of land under maize cultivation, 99 acres, rice, and 17 acres of tomatoes. Mr Kwaku Oppong-Kyekyeku Kaakyire, the District Chief Executive (DCE), said the goal was to help to achieve food security. He said the District Directorate of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture acting together with the West African Agricultural Productivity Programme (WAAPP) had also established a one-acre cassava demonstration far= m at Boamang.

This idea is to help to provide farmers with high yielding cassava varieties and to train them on modern farming techniques. Mr Oppong-Kyekyeku was addressing an ordinary meeting of the Assembl= y at Kodie on Monday.

He said with the cocoa disease and pest control programme (CODAPEC) restructured, all cocoa farms in the area would be sprayed and that additional spraying gangs had been formed to assist to make that happen. He identified environmental degradation through illegal logging and sand winning as one of the major challenges they were faced with. He, therefore, urged members of the Assembly to work closely with th= e Unit Committees in their communities to tackle those illegal activities. The District Security Committee (DISEC) had set up a Task Force to help to check the menace. Mr Oppong-Kyekyeku also complained about wildfires and invited all to help to prevent this and to protect the natural vegetation.
