A pressure group, the Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG), is demanding the resignation of the Attorney General, Mrs Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong, following allegations that she benefitted from the controversial Ghc51.2 million judgement debt.
Acquitted and discharged businessman Alfred Woyome has written to the chief of staff and the secretary to the president asking the AG to resign or step aside from the appeal because she earned the Cedi equivalent of $1 million from the money in contention.
According to Woyome, Mrs Appiah-Oppong, whose firm – Lithur Brew and Co – benefitted from the payment while representing Austro Invest and M-PowerPack in the same case before becoming AG, cannot be at the helm of affairs as far as the appeal application is concerned.
AFAG is demanding a total overhaul of the AG’s department, adding the appeal by the AG will not succeed if Mrs Appiah-Oppong is still at post.
“Out of the blue, Mrs. Marietta Brew [Appiah-Oppong] created that company from the dead and then used that company to pursue Agbesi Woyome – monies which Woyome claimed was an illegal payment,” the General Secretary of AFAG Arnold Boateng claimed.
“They created the company and used it as a conduit for the payment to be made to them and once the payment was made the company was dissolved abruptly.”
He added: “The AG’s unwillingness to prosecute Betty Mould-Iddrisu and Ebo Barton-Odro who were indicted affected and justified the payment… AFAG on the score of these deems any appeal against Woyome as dead on arrival if the AG does not step aside… the state attorneys handling the case must be replaced as soon as possible.”
