MEDIA ADVISORY Who: His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, (Oh-toom-fo O-say-ee) King of the Ashanti Kingdom of Ghana and Nana Effah-Apenteng, the Ambassador to the United Nations from Ghana.
What: Will tour the New York Stock Exchange floor and visit the African ancestral burial grounds.
The King, accompanied by African Chiefs and his personal entourage of horn blowers, will be in tribal dress with 400 pounds of jewelry, and will be joined by children dancers from Ghana, etc. It’s going to be colorful, and something that does not happen in Manhattan every day, for sure!
When: Monday, May 21. — 8:45 a.m. New York Stock Exchange
— 10:00 a.m. The African Burial Ground, Elk and Duane Streets, off Broadway, two blocks north of Chambers. A ceremony honoring the dead slaves interred at the African burial round will be performed.
— 10:35 a.m. The King and his entourage depart by motorcade to the UN where he meets with the Kofi Anan, Secretary General of the United Nations.
Why: His Majesty is on an official visit to meet investors, create interest in investing in Ghana and to increase awareness of the AIDS crisis in Africa.
The African Burial Ground
The burial ground, which is one quarter of an acre, is believed to contain the remains of as many as 10,000 African slaves. The burial ground, discovered a decade ago, is recognized as one of the nation’s most significant archaeological finds of the last century. Ghana was a key port in the notorious slave trade triangle.
