The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), on Wednesday cautioned the public on the distribution and sale of Adomfe Water which is said to have medicinal properties.
Investigations by the Authority revealed that the product which is being sold in some parts of the country in vans and market centres is said to treat various diseases, including stroke, infertility and cardiovascular diseases.
A statement from the FDA signed by Mr Hudu Mogtari, Chief Executive Officer, noted that the product is ordinary water with no therapeutic properties and therefore the claims being made are deceptive.
Schedule Five of the Public Health Act 2012 (Act 851) does not allow any food product, which includes water, to be sold as a medicinal product under any circumstance.
The FDA has seized a quantity of the said unregistered water in the Brong Ahafo Region and therefore cautioned the public against the patronage of the water since the Authority cannot guarantee its safety, quality and efficacy and those distributing the said water.
It also noted that it is a criminal offence to offer for sale products that have not been given approval by the FDA.
Additionally, the public is being assured of FDA’s readiness to ensure public health and safety at all times and asked the public to give any information on persons suspected to be selling the water.
