Adentan Assembly fails to elect MCE

The Adentan Municipal Assembly was yesterday unable to endorse for the 4th time, the appointment of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Benjamin Baroson Angenu.

Seventeen assembly members – made up of 11 elected members and six government appointees – voted to reject President Mahama’s nominee at the Victory Presby Church at Adentan.

At the end of voting the electoral officer declared that the assembly was unable to confirm the candidate since he did not get the two-thirds of the valid votes required.

Benjamin Baroson Angenu polled 11 with five abstaining and one ballot was rejected. The nominee has 10 days a second attempt.

Earlier, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, had advised the members to bury all their differences and endorse the candidate.

He said they should not allow themselves to be used by people with selfish agenda.

The Minister told them that he had stopped signing documents on their behalf as the acting MCE of the area because he wanted them to consider the harm they were causing the municipality and have a change of mind to build consensus.

The general mood of the assembly members, chiefs and staff of the assembly who were present for the event, was that of disappointment

The Assembly Members, who spoke to DAILY GUIDE accused the government appointees of sabotage and refusing to vote in favour of the nominee.

The Chief of Nmai Dzor, Nii Okpelor Sowah, who was very embittered about the development, said they were suffering because people they trusted would champion their interests had failed them.

The Presiding Member for the assembly, Gladys Naadu, described the situation as “shameful.”
